| RESPONSES TO THIS STORY BELOW NE EXCLUSIVE: COPS USED LOVER TO TRAP SCOTT Police tapped the phone of Scott Peterson's lover Amber Frey after his wife Laci's murder- and recorded him sweet talking Amber about marriage, gifts and a European vacation! For nearly four months, single mom Amber, successfully carried off a dangerous charade, leading Scott along even as her family feared her own life was in danger, the NE has learned. "By the time Scott was arrested, Amber's nerves were shattered," says her father Ron Frey. "This has been a nightmare for our entire family," he said. "Amber has been a tremendous help to the police and she's a tough little girl- but there were some nerve racking moments when I really feared for her saftey." A source close to the case has said "Amber has been the unsung heroine of this investigation." Amber came forward six days after Laci disappeared to reveal to Modesto police that she had been having a torrid affair with Scott. The heartbroken woman said Scott told her he was single-his wife died a year ago and he'd beguiled her with talk of marriage. She dispelled any doubts about her story by producing photos of herself and Scott in intimate, loving poses. That is when Amber was recruited as the "secret agent" who helped bring Scott to justice. She told cops that Scott had continued to romance her by phone in the days after Laci's disappearence- before Amber found out her lover was really married and a father to be. Amber's home phone became the investigators' clandestine link to Peterson as he roamed free. "Incredibly, even at the time of his arrest, Scott continued to bombard Amber with romantic calls- every one of which were recorded by police." Some of the calls even came when he was out of the country in Mexico. The cops were able to listen in as he sweet-talked her, offered her expensive presents and even a European vacation, and desperately tried to get her to meet with him. The cops were able to pick up vital clues from the calls to Amber. And were able to gauge Scott's demeanor when his guard was down. In the early days of the investigation the police even used the calls to keep track of Scott's whereabouts. Amber walked a fine line, never agreeing to meet with Scott but keeping him calling. Amber continued with the charade even despite her family's fears for her own saftey. A dramatic indication of the mounting concern for her saftey came in March, when she and her 2 year old daughter left Fresno for a brief vacation in Vero Beach, Florida. Det. Jon Buehler, one of the lead investigators, actually drove them to the airport in San Jose himself and watched as they boarded the plane to make sure Scott didn't make an unexpected appearance. And unknown to Amber she was watched around the clock by police while she relaxed at a seaside condo in Vero Beach. When Amber returned home there were new scares. By then police had placed an electronic positioning device in Scott's truck and one night it told a horrified detective he was only three blocks from her home. "Fortunately he kept driving, but it was a scary moment." Amber was a victim also -- obviously not as serious and tragic as Laci, but she was victimized by Scott. And, probably, at least in the beginning, she was very naive. I'm glad she helped le.
