| From: RICKAMORTI1 STAR WITNESS IN LACI MURDER CASE UNDER 24 HOUR POLICE PROTECTION ENQUIRER EXCLUSIVE BY DAVID WRIGHT September 16, 2003 synopsis The state's star witness in the Scott Peterson murder case is under police guard as she prepares to give damning evidence against Peterson, The NE, has learned. Amber Frey, Peterson's former secret lover, has moved to a new home where she can be kept under round-the clock surveillance as the accused wife-killer's Sept. 9 preliminary hearing approaches. Before moving, the massage therapist told police she thought she was being followed, a source close to the case told the NE. "She said she feared for her safety," the source said. "Since Scott has been in jail, he's received money and love letters from complete strangers who say they believe he is innocent." "There is no telling what some crazy stalker might do, so police are taking no chances. Amber is their key witness and she can help put Scott on death row." Peterson, 30, is jailed on charges of murdering his pregnant wife Laci and their unborn son Conner, who vanished form their Modesto home last Christmas Eve. Amber, 28, told police on Dec.30, that she'd had an affair with Peterson, who had informed her he was a widower even before Laci's murder. She told investigators Peterson continued to make romantic calls to her while supposedly leading the search for his wife's body. In a move that proved increasingly risky, Amber volunteered to tape Scott's daily phone calls to her. She did so for nearly three months, almost until the time of Peterson's arrest. During that time, the frightened woman lost weight, suffered sleepless nights and had recurring nightmares in which a dead Laci appeared. Prosecutors expect to play the so-called Amber Tapes in court, including the dramatic moment when - as revealed in the NE- Peterson admitted to Amber that he knew who was responsible for Laci's death. "I didn't do anything to Laci- but I know who did,"Scott blurted out. "Somebody else is involved, but I can't tell you who." That was the smoking gun cops had waited for. Peterson, who had told police he knew nothing about Laci's disappearance, was admitting that was a lie. That revelation makes Amber the prosecution's most anticipated witness. "It's little wonder the police are determined to keep Amber safe," said an insider. "She and her 2 year old daughter recently moved out of the house that Scott had frequently visited and into an apartment complex that has 24- hour security. Before she moved in, police met with the security staff to emphasize how important her saftey is.
