2002 Jackie called to complain about Laci. "She looked so silly" she said. "She was wearing white gloves and a white scarf. She looked like Minnie Mouse." "You didn't say anything," I asked. "No, but the next day she wore black gloves and a black scarf, and it wasn't much of an improvement." Jackie replied. |

| On our trip with the family to Disneyland in November 2002, I said to Laci, "I'm so glad you're having a boy", "Me too" said Laci. "What do you think of the name 'Logan?'" "I love it" Anne replied. "I don't. I don't like it at all" Jackie piped up in a very mean way. When I looked at Laci, she looked as if someone had slapped her across her face. |

| In her book, Bird seemed puzzled by her mother's thinly veiled dislike for Scott Peterson's bubbly wife. Bird churned out vignettes in proof: Jackie Peterson critiquing her daughter- in-law's thank-you cards, nastily objecting to Laci Peterson's wish to name her son Logan, and turning her nose up at her daughter-in-law's hometown — Modesto. "I was beginning to understand why Jackie was so critical of Laci," Bird wrote. "No one was good enough for her golden boy." |
| Shortly after a baby shower for Laci, I received
a card. "Thank you for the books and toys. I can't wait until Conner can play with them and read with Ryan & Tommy (Anne's boys)." I thought it was a lovely card. I loved the fact she was already thinking of our boys playing together. Jackie called the same day to tell me she received a card and asked if I liked mine. "Yes", I said. "It was lovely, why?" "I didn't like the way mine was written," she said. "What was wrong with it?" I asked. "It just didn't seem right. I'm going to send her a book on how to write thank you notes." "Please don't do that." I said. "My card was perfectly lovely. And it will only upset her. Why upset her when she's so close to having the baby?" Luckily, Jackie dropped the idea. |
| Jackie made a face and said "Laci is such a perfectionist. She always has to redo everything. You give her something that's already perfect, but she'll still find away to improve it." It wasn't a compliment, Jackie seemed to be hinting that Laci took Martha Stewart a little more seriously than nature intended. |
