| "TRIMBLE" THE SEARCH DOG
August 31, 2004 When the prosecution put a picture of a search dog on the projection screen, there was a synchronized "aahhh, so cute" coming from the courtroom. A bunch of jurors had a big smile on the face. "Trimble" is a golden Labrador, a trailing dog used to look for Laci Peterson's scent. "Trimble" comes from 5 generations of search dogs. Her father was a champion dog and her mother was a certified search dog. Trimble was born and raised specifically for this line of work. "Trimble" was able to pick up Laci Peterson's scent at the edge of a pier near the Berkeley marina – the same spot where Scott Peterson claimed he went fishing on Christmas Eve 2002. That supports the prosecution's theory that Peterson used that fishing trip to dump his wife's body in the bay. But during cross-examination, defense attorney Pat Harris tried to provide an explanation about how Laci's scent got there. According to dog handler, Captain Christopher Boyer, everyone releases about 150-thousand skin rafts an hour. Skin rafts are basically dead skin cells. Basically, if you just shake someone's hands, you have a bunch of their skin rafts now on you. The reporters looked at each other with an 'eewww gross' expression on their faces. The defense tried to say it would have been very easy for Scott Peterson to transport Laci's Peterson' skin rafts to the marina because they were husband and wife. They slept in the same bed and rode in the same cars. Their skin rafts were probably all over each other. Prosecuting Attorney Dave Harris was visibly sick in court today. He has a bad case of the flu – maybe because he got someone's skin rafts. During an afternoon break, I heard the judge tell him "Have you tried Theraflu?" Near the end of the day, Harris' health was deteriorating and it appears he wasn't well enough to finish the questioning of the dog handler. The judge ended court 15 minutes early and told Harris to "go home and get some rest." The judge also said in a semi-serious, semi-joking manner that he doesn't want the jurors to get sick because that would cause some significant delays. Harris will hopefully be back tomorrow to finish the questioning of another dog handler, Eloise Anderson. If he's not back, the prosecution may have to shuffle some witnesses around.
