On Christmas Eve, 2002, after Laci was reported "missing", Scott Peterson led detectives to his fertilizer warehouse, where they inspected his 14-foot fishing boat. In it, they found a tackle box and a rod.
Police responding to the report of a missing pregnant woman at 523 Covena found Laci Peterson's Land Rover parked in the driveway next to her husband's pickup truck. Detective Al Brocchini testified that when he opened the door of the truck and accidentally dinged the SUV's door, Peterson was very concerned and got a leather glove to hold as a buffer between the door and the vehicle. The prosecution argued that he was more concerned about a scratch on his truck than his wife's disappearance.

In taped interviews with three different reporters, Peterson said he was so distraught about his unborn son that he could not venture into the nursery he and his wife had prepared and decorated in a nautical theme. "That door is closed. I can't look, you know, in that door," he said to a reporter. When Detective Craig Grogan took the stand, he pointed out that when investigators searched the home, the nursery was being used as a storage room for chairs and linens.

When police searched Peterson's truck on Feb. 18, they found these children's books. The defense suggested they were gifts for his nieces and nephews--proof that he had no intention of fleeing when he was arrested on April 18, two days before Easter. However, Peterson was also known to give gifts to his mistress, Amber Frey, and her toddler daughter.
