| NEW EVIDENCE May 13, 2003 There are new developments in the Laci Peterson murder case. Scott Peterson's mistress may have hired a new attorney, and police have found a key piece of evidence in Scott's boat. It could play a big part in the prosecution's case that's built largely on circumstantial evidence. When investigators searched Scott’s aluminum boat, they found Laci’s hair tangled in a pair of pliers. DNA tests did confirm the strands of hair did belong to Laci. It could be a key piece of evidence for the prosecution in the state’s case versus Scott Peterson. “It sounds like, if there is indeed evidence of pliers with her hair in it, that new type of evidence more directly links him, perhaps, to her death or committing a murder,” said McGeorge School of Law Professor Ruth Jones. What the pliers were used for remains unclear, yet the prosecution may give the jury possible scenarios. “There are far fewer reasonable explanations for why her hair would be in pliers,” said Professor Jones. “The explanations that come to mind most quickly are they could have been used to dispose of her body. And, unlike evidence of hair that might be found in the house, where we would expect to find her hair where she was living, it really is a typical to find hair of a woman in a pair of pliers.” We’re also learning about two eyewitnesses that may have spotted Scott onChristmas Eve morning at the Berkeley marina. Scott caught the attention of two city workers after he accidentally backed his trailer into the dock. But the Parks and Recreation workers aren’t talking. It is, however, likely that they will be called as prosecution witnesses. Meanwhile, Scott’s former girlfriend, Amber Frey may be getting some legal help. High-powered attorney, Gloria Alred, plans to meet with Amber in the Fresno area. Sources say Amber is looking at suing, not only a photographer who sold nude photos of her, but also a former friend who cashed in after selling pictures of Amber and Scott to a national tabloid. STORY 2 Laci's Hair On Scott's Pliers Sources told NBC News Chief Legal Correspondent Dan Abrams that a key piece of evidence in the Laci Peterson trial will be a piece of hair found on pliers that belonged to Scott. The pliers were reportedly found aboard his boat. In other developments, sources told Abrams they believe they have an alternative "credible suspect" who they say is connected in some way to the "mystery woman" mentioned by high-profile defense attorney Mark Geragos last week. They also claim to have three credible witnesses to back their case. Abrams also reports that Scott's former girlfriend, Amber Frey, has approached defense attorney Gloria Allred to represent her. Abrams said he believes Allred would represent her more as a spokesperson. Allred did not confirm or deny their meeting to Abrams. Scott Peterson's parents have sold a car to help pay for the defense, Abrams reported. Several reporters received letters that their conversations with Scott Peterson were the result of a wiretap of Peterson's phone. The phonetap took place from January 10 through early February. Reporters from KXTV in Sacramento, the The Modesto Bee and KCRA all received the notifications. Criminal defense attorney Frank Carson said that a wiretap of this kind is relatively rare. Scott Peterson is expected to return to court May 27. HOME INDEX TRIAL ALIBI-WITNESS LIST AUTOPSY EVIDENCE-NEWS & STORIES LACI SCOTT INCONSISTENT STATEMENTS WIRETAPS |
