FACE TO FACE:
The showdown between Scott & his ex-mistress

Scott Peterson and his ex-mistress Amber Frey are preparing for a dramatic courtroom showdown.
Peterson is now on
trial in Redwood City, Calif., for the horrific murders of his pregant wife Laci
and their unborn son Conner in December 2002. Amber, who
gave birth to her second
child in April will take the stand as a star witness against him.

One all the evidence has been heard, court-watchers say, it will be Amber's gripping
testimony that will finally send the 31 year old fertilizer salesman to death row.

"Prosecutors believe Scott was prepared to throw away his life with Laci so he could start fresh with
Amber." a pal of the blonde massage therapist tells GLOBE. "Now she's the chief
witness against him."

"She had no idea he was a married man when she agreed to go on a date with him."
Amber and Peterson had their first date Nov. 19, 2002, at a hotel in Fresno 90 miles
south of the Peterson's Modesto family home. He told Amber he had lost his wife.
*first date at a hotel? kind of cozy for newly meeting twosome I would think*

"She believed his countless lies, and now her life has been turned upside down forever,"
says the friend. "Her evidence is bound to make the jury think he can't be trusted."

Tapes of Peterson's "96" phone calls to Amber after Laci's disappearance are a major part
of the case against him. Just 10 minutes before a poignant Dec. 31
candelight vigil for
Laci was about to start, Peterson
called Amber and said he was in Europe on business.

On Dec. 23,  the last day prosecutors say Laci was seen alive by anyone apart from her husband,
Scott, called Amber to say he was leaving on a business trip to Kennebunkport, Maine -
another lie.

Scott and Amber last spoke Feb 19, 2003 after she offered to help cops by taping
his calls to her. Convicting Scott may not be the 'slam dunk" authorities expect.
His hotshot attorney Mark Geragos claims police bungled the investigation.

Geragos shot down the prosecutions claim that Peterson lied when he told detectives he
last saw his wife as she watched Marth Stewart discuss meringues on her tv show Dec. 24.

Prosecutors said the meringue show aired Dec. 23, but Geragos screened a clip in
court from the show on the 24th on which Stewart discusses meringues as well.

Says Laurie Levenson a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles,
"Geragos is creating reasonable doubt any way he can."
