Ron Grantski's  statement to the media
    Published: April 23, 2003

Editor's Note: This is a statement read by Ron Grantski,
Laci Peterson's stepfather, to the assembled media at the
Modesto Police Department on Monday, April 21, 2003.

The last four months have been the worst time of our lives.
I’ve watched our
family and friends change both physically and
mentally, but one thing that has never changed was that we
would do anything within our power to get Laci back.
Hundreds of people worked day and night, Christmas, New Years.

Whatever it took they would do to help find Laci.   Our local businessmen and
women donated lodging, food, posters, whatever was needed to help find Laci.

The local police as well as law enforcement throughout  the state, worked day
and night to help find Laci.  The press got the word out to the whole nation.

People everywhere got involved through prayer, cards, e-mails, donations and
our family wants to thank you so much. Without all of you, who knows...

We would like to thank all of the people who helped us with our extensive search efforts;
those who searched by plane, on horseback, by boat, by car and on foot, as well as divers
used in lakes and rivers in several counties surrounding the Modesto area.

Kim Petersen and the Sund/Carrington Foundation have been a Godsend.
She was able to provide advice, guidance and support on so many things.
She’s a part of our lives now.

I know all of you would like for us to say something about Scott, but we’re not going to
do that. We owe it to Laci to let the courts bring the facts out. I’m not going to say
anything that could jeopardize the hard work of so many men and women.

We started this nightmare with one purpose in mind- to find Laci
and bring her home. While this is not the way we wanted to
bring her home, it will help us to begin the long process of healing.

While we understand that there are many people who would like to hear from
us, in the very near future  we have two very tough days to get through:

Laci’s birthday is May 4th.
Funeral services for Laci and Conner

We realize that we have a very long and difficult road ahead of
us and our primary concern is working through this as a family.

All of the cards, flowers, candles, stuffed animals and pictures left at Laci’s
house mean so much to us. We spend time each day reading the notes and
cards left at the house as well as the guestbook entries on the website.

We have seen video and pictures of many of you stopping by Laci’s house
to show your support for our family and your love for our Laci and
Conner.
Our family has chosen to donate the stuffed animals to the Children’s Crisis
Center and the MDIC program for abused children in Laci’s name.

I feel sorry for Jackie and Lee and their family. They don’t deserve this.

But Laci and our family don’t either.
