EARLY SUSPECT IN MURDER HELD SECOND TIME

An early suspect in the 3-year old slaying of John H. Latham, 36,
salvage dealer, was held in the city jail yesterday for renewed
questioning by police, on the basis of new, undisclosed evidence.

Robert Sewell, 28, Negro, of 2184 Logan Ave.,  again denied any
connection with the bludgeoning of Latham, detectives said.

Latham's body was found Dec. 21, 1945 in the yard of his salvage
and tire establishment at 2190 Main st.   An iron pipe had
bashed in his head and $800.00 was believed to have been
removed from the victim.

The new evidence reportedly came from a Negro from Stockton.
Numerous persons remain to be interviewed in the case
according to Lt. Mort Geer, head of the homicide detail.

Sewell was arrested in the 2100 block of Franklin Ave by Detective
Sgts. Anthony McGuire and Russell Ormsby who said that up to
Jan. 7, the Negro was employed as a Coronado trash
collector by a private contractor.  They said Sewell returned
to Birmingham, Ala., his former home, in October 1946
and remained until August 21, 1948.  He is a native of Alabama.

Discharged by Latham, 2 days before the slaying, Sewell was
arrested as a suspect shortly after the crime was discovered
but was released.  Information concerning Sewell's financial
condition at the time of the death is sought from his estranged
wife, Beatrice, 26, who had not been located.
