| January 8, 2003 The cheery periwinkle-blue, sailor-themed baby nursery has an antique life preserver over the crib emblazoned with the greeting, "Welcome Aboard." But the door to the room in the home of Laci and Scott Peterson is closed shut. This Saturday was to be Laci's shower for their first child, a boy due Feb.10, and as usual the spunky "little Martha Stewart" helped plan every detail, from the bacon-and-avocado croissant sandwiches to the Hershey kisses party favors, with the note, "It started with a kiss." Now, the shower is on hold as police, friends and strangers search for the27-year-old, eight-months-pregnant substitute teacher, who is married to a San Diego native and vanished without a trace Christmas Eve. | In taped interviews with three different reporters, Peterson said he was so distraught about his unborn son that he could not venture into the nursery he and his wife had prepared and decorated in a nautical theme. "That door is closed. I can't look, you know, in that door," he said to a reporter. When Detective Craig Grogan took the stand, he pointed out that when investigators searched the home, the nursery was being used as a storage room for chairs and linens. |
