| In a strange twist of fate,a photo of Scott cradling a baby in his arms helped convince the jury that he was a monster who killed his wife Laci and unborn son Conner. The picture was introduced into evidence by Scott's attorney, Mark Geragos during the defense portion of the trial. The photo was clearly shown to suggest to the jury that Scott loved children, subtly contradicting the prosecution claim that he was not looking forward to fatherhood. But it had the exact opposite effect, said San Mateo County defense attorney Paula Canny. "Showing that photo backfired," Canny told the Enquirer after the verdict. "Geragos was trying to present Scott as a baby loving fellow--while the jury knew very well that he was still trying to romance Amber Frey when that photo was taken. It just made Scott look like a monster to the jury. It made them hate him even more." Scott's mother Jackie was on the stand at the time the photo was shown in court. Under questioning from Geragos, Jackie desperately tried to convince the jury her son was not a murderer. She explained that the photo was taken at the Jan. 12, 2003 Christening of Scott's nephew, the son of Anne Bird. Geragos pointed out that in the photo, Scott appeared to be growing a goatee, which countered the suggestion that he grew a goatee three months later in April, just before his arrest to disguise himself. But while Geragos clearly showed the photo to display a tender side of Scott, The Enquirer learned exclusively the story behind the photo--and there was no tenderness involved! "Scott was very uncomfortable at my son's christening," Anne Bird's husband Tim said in an exclusive interview. The religous ceremony was held at St. Clement's Episcopal Church in Berkeley, CA, just a few miles from where the bodies of Laci and Conner lay at the bottom of San Francisco Bay. Scott, mom Jackie and his father Lee drove up from Modesto, said Tim. "Scott sat at the end of one of the pews but he never focused on the christening. He sat sideways, continuously looking out the back door like he was expecting the cops to come storming in after him. After the christening, my wife Anne passed the baby off to Scott to hold. He seemed flustered. His mother Jackie said it was the first and only time he'd ever held a baby." After the ceremony the group joined Rev. Bruce O'Neill in the sanctuary, where he led everyone in a prayer for Laci, who had been missing three weeks at the time. "During the prayer session, Scott didn't seem like a distraught, upset person who was missing his wife," said Tim. "He looked like he didn't care. There was no emotion there." "You'd think he wouldn't be able to contain his grief. I didn't see any of that. There was just a blank look on his face." "Here's the kicker: After the christening, Scott went home to Modesto and that's the day he ordered hard core porn channels from his TV company!" The jury did hear testimony that Scott ordered XXX-rated stations on Jan. 12, 2003, the day the photo was taken--yet another reason the photo backfired for the defense. "I felt that was a sick and twisted thing to do on the same day he was at the baptism of my son", Tim said. He added that his wife Anne still believes Scott may have been wrongly convicted, but he's convinced the jury made the right decision.
