Guns Found
During Peterson Search

July 11, 2003

When police searched the home of Scott Peterson who is accused of
killing his wife,
Laci,  and the couple's unborn son on Christmas Eve,
they seized shotguns and a handgun.

Scott's father, Lee Peterson, made the revelation in an interview with
the paper. He said that his son was an avid sportsman and the
two often went bird hunting together.

"Police have Scott's guns," he told the paper. "He had some bird guns
and a handgun. It's not against the law. This is the United States."

It was not known when the authorities seized the weapons. Modesto
police staged two extensive searches of the Peterson home -- once
shortly after Laci's Christmas Eve disappearance and then on
Feb. 18-19 when officers concluded a meticulous two-day search,
driving away with more than 90 items.

The warrants for those searches remain sealed under the order of the
Stanislaus County Superior Court.Lee Peterson also revealed that when
he stays at the
couple's home -- the alleged site of Laci's Christmas Eve
murder -- he sleeps with a shotgun near his side.  He simply does
not feel safe in the home because he believes that the killers of his
beloved daughter-in-law and grandson remain at large. The gun is
kept in its case  "by the side of the bed with shells nearby."

"I'm not going to stay in that house without some kind of protection,"
Peterson told the paper. "I'm going to continue to take it up there."

Scott Peterson's defense team and family members have remained undaunted in
their contention that someone other than the Modesto fertilizer salesman killed Laci.

Lee Peterson told the newspaper that the couple's home had been subject to
"two or three break-ins" and family members have heard  "people banging on
the gate." One of those
break-ins was a highly publicized raid by Laci's family
when several items -- including a rocking chair and nursery furniture --
were removed from the home.
Jackie responded with anger.

The paper reported that the Petersons were making the mortgage payments on
the house for their son and were staying there to maintain the home and also
save on
hotel expenses while traveling back and forth from their San Diego home
to visit their son in the Stanislaus County jail and also attend court hearings.
