The Peterson Family Speaks
Laci is dead; their son is on trial. How are they coping?

~In their first interview about the events of the last year, Scott Peterson's parents Jackie and Lee;
sister-in-law
Janey; half sister Susan Caudillo and half brothers Joe and John spoke recently
to PEOPLE'S Ron Arias and Vickie Bane and Jackie and Lee's home in a San Diego suburb

"We're standing beside him 200 percent," says Jackie Peterson. Still, it is clear the past 18 months
have been difficult. Jackie, who suffers from acute bronchitis, says she has only 20 percent lung
capacity and is on the waiting list for a lung transplant. Because travel is difficult for her, she is
staying in a Redwood City motel for the duration of the trial. Stress, she says, makes her condition
worse, but at the same time, the Peterson's are reluctant to showcase their problems. Scott is
"stoic," says Jackie, and the trait runs in the family. "How many [of us] have you seen
sobbing
on national television?" asks Janey. "You have six siblings here, six different personalities,
and all of us have coped in a different way. So for anyone to sit there and say, 'Scott's not
behaving like he should be for having a missing pregnant wife' - there's no textbook for that."

Nor is there any easy way to explain to Scott's nieces and nephews that their uncle is facing a double
murder charge. "The horrific reality of this," says Janey, "is that we can't protect our kids. their Aunt Laci
is gone. Their cousin Conner is gone -- they didn't get to meet him. You can't shield them from that."

The whole family, even the little kids, corresponds with Scott nearly daily, and they save up
jokes to tell him during weekly prison visits. "You walk in and see his smile," says Jackie,
"and you're so glad you came." The hardest part, she says, is not being able to touch her son,
who at one point was even wearing shackles when she saw him through the glass. But,
insists Janey, "we will get through this. There are bad days and very difficult things,
make no mistake, but with each one, we have found a way to cope." And most
important, she says, "the victims here are Conner and Laci, not us."
