Also taking the stand was Modesto police Officer Jon Evers, who said Scott
Peterson told his wife's stepfather, Ron Grantski, that he scrapped golf
because it was too cold, heading instead to San Francisco Bay
to fish.

Evers said Scott Peterson told police he cut short the fishing trip because he became chilled
as it started to rain. "He couldn't say" what kind of fish he was angling for, Evers testified.

Scott Peterson, Sharon Rocha, Grantski and others had gathered about 6 p.m.
that day at Dry Creek Park in Modesto after Laci vanished, said Evers,
the first officer to answer Grantski's call reporting Laci missing.

Peterson produced a receipt from Dec. 24 for parking in a lot at the Berkeley
Marina, where he said he launched the boat for two hours of fishing.

Scott was upset. Sharon was upset. Foul play was suspected almost immediately, Evers said.

"I remember Laci's mom Sharon crying," Evers said. "She was very, very,
very upset. When (Scott) walked up, he appeared to be very upset."

The bodies of Laci  and her son washed ashore in April, about three miles from
where Peterson said he was fishing.   Prosecutors may argue Peterson
used the boat to throw his pregnant wife's body in San Francisco Bay.
