| April 20, 2003 Friends Lose Faith In Scott Two close friends of Scott and Laci Peterson said no matter how Scott Peterson's murder trial turns out -- their friendship with him won't be the same as it was. Mike and Heather Richardson said they used to vacation and go out to dinner with the Petersons. Heather was planning a baby shower for Laci Peterson before she disappeared. But they said that their trust in Scott Peterson has been shaken. "He was obviously two different people, he was who he had to be when he was with different people, Richardson stated. Laci "was very private about their relationship," she added. Mike Richardson said it's "unfathomable" to think that his friend may be a killer. Richardson's wife said that regardless of whether Scott Peterson killed his wife -- the fact that he was having an affair is a "betrayal just in itself." They noticed his hair color appeared different about two weeks ago. Mike Richardson, the best man at Laci and Scott Peterson's wedding, said Scott told him he had been "swimming in a friend's pool and it got bleached." Scott called Richardson and his wife, Heather Richardson, at their home from jail, Heather said. "I didn't expect to hear from him," she said. Mike Richardson added: "It's a hard, hard thing to even discuss. ... We're best friends with both of them. Now, thinking that he took her life is just a crazy thing." "Yeah, Scott called a few hours after he'd been arrested," Heather Richardson said. "We had been leaving messages for each other, you know, days previous, and he basically called because he wanted to make sure he returned our call." "Today" host Katie Couric asked if Peterson said he was innocent. "Nothing like that," Heather Richardson said. "He -- he was obviously upset. It sounded like he may have been crying. But yes, he was -- he was definitely shaken up." The Richardsons told Couric that Scott was "overjoyed" about becoming a father and enjoyed playing with their children. Richardson said of Laci, "She really lit up this world, and when she left it, some of the light really did go out of this world. There's a piece missing."
