Peterson's Lawyers: Laci's Killers Could Have Been 'Satanic'
Defense Team Suggests New Theory
May 16, 2003

Scott Peterson's new legal team has announced a  disturbing new theory on how
they claim Laci may have been killed. Sources tell NBC News that Peterson's
lawyers
are looking into the possibility that Laci was killed, then savagely "
carved up."

Defense Attorneys say that could suggest Peterson was murdered by
a
satanic cult, not by her husband.

NBC News chief legal correspondent Dan Abrams says the defense has  been
considering this theory for almost a week. He says they'll be taking a look at
autopsy
documents eagerly Friday to continue preparing Scott Peterson's defense.

Abrams said the defense theory posits that Laci's unborn child was not expelled
from her body, but cut out as a cult ritual. Defense attorneys say the death could
have come at the hands of a members of one of Modesto's known cults.

The defense claims to have a credible suspect. The team has poured through the
first half of 30,000 documents related to the case. They are planning  an "
OJ Simpson-
like attack" on the police investigation, Abrams reported. He also said the defense
says there is only one piece of physical evidence, a piece of hair found on a pair of
Scott's
pliers. The defense team says there is no blood evidence.

Abrams says the defense considers this new satanic theory a "working" one and
may not pursue it. However, Abrams says there are a couple of known satanic
cults in Modesto, so it is not "completely out there," he said. Though Abrams
admitted some would hear the latest claims and say, "Come on, give me a break."

Asked about the "mystery woman" the defense had been seeking to bolster their case,
Abrams said the defense team is no longer as concerned with finding her because they
believe they have a credible suspect even thoughthe woman they sought apparently has
not materialized. Peterson's' lawyer,Mark Geragos, had made a plea to find the supposed
"mystery woman" who he claimed could help point to another killer and not his client.

Thursday, a judge sealed the autopsy report on Laci Peterson just as it was completed.

In other developments Friday, police were returning to the scene where Laci's body was recovered
on the Richmond Shore.  It was not known what police would be searching for at Pt. Isabel.
