| Scott Peterson train heading for crash By ANGELA PASSIDOMO TRAFFORD Scripps Howard News Service June 17, 2003 Scott Peterson, suspected killer of wife Laci and son Conner, is dabbing his eyes. With a neatly folded handkerchief, Peterson, now under the expert tutelage of famed defense attorney Mark Geragos, is wiping away the occasional tear from his eye. Heretofore I have registered the impenetrable mask of composure on Peterson's face, and wondered where the outrage and grief were hidden; if indeed these feelings were present at all. The murder of this beautiful woman and her infant is an outrage. Her husband is facing the death penalty if convicted of the crime. What disturbs me is the look on Scott Peterson's face. His face and eyes don't express the agony, strain or suffering that a man's face would register at the heinous murder of his wife and child. Moreover, we find that Peterson has lied in his interviews on national television and was apprehended by the police bearing his brother's driver's license, $10,000 cash, and his hair dyed blonde just miles away from the Mexican border. "Obviously, this guy is stacking lie upon lie upon lie. He's indicting himself," says child advocate Marc Klaas. "It's like watching a train wreck, and he's the train." Peterson lied to Amber Frey, his mistress, passing himself off as a single man. The affair does give Scott Peterson a motivation for murder. When asked if Peterson seemed frantic at his wife's disappearance Rocha gravely answered, "No. Not at all." Another Rocha family member said, "He just didn't register the emotions of what someone who had lost their wife and son would feel." According to attorney Geragos, Laci is possibly the victim of a satanic cult. Geragos has touched a major nerve of fear in the American public with this spin on the case's perspective. Did the devil do it? Or did the devil make Scott Peterson do it? The fact is: Scott Peterson lies, and these lies cast suspicion upon him. Scott Peck's book, "People of the Lie," a study of human evil-expresses the truth that human evil is marked by the pretense of lies. Evil was present in the O.J. Simpson case - and in Simpson's cold expressionless mask of a face. Yet Simpson was able to buy millions of dollars of American "justice." There is rampant sadism, and an escalating scale of sexual predators and criminals wandering the streets of this country. It is all so alarming. When I see Scott Peterson's smooth untroubled face and eyes I wonder-where is his anger and outrage at the murder of his wife and son-indeed at his own arrest? I see the torment in his father's face, but not in his. Why didn't he view the funeral of his wife and son? Why does he lie? As Sharon Rocha's husband Ron Grantski said, "We owe it to Laci to let the courts bring the facts out." Former Prosecutor Nancy Grace, a passionate victim's advocate, feels that the spotlight of the media belongs in the courtroom of this trial. "There's nothing like sunshine to disinfect a courtroom," said Grace. Let the sun shine in. With God's help, may we all pray that whoever is responsible for this heinous crime be held accountable. May we see through the lies, the magic tricks, all the smoke and mirrors. No one wants to see an innocent man get the death penalty. No one wants to see a guilty man go free. May the conscience of our country be reflected in justice prevailing for Laci Peterson. May her murder and the murder of her child be vindicated. Godspeed Laci and Conner. May the truth set you free.
