WAS LACI FOUND
IN MARCH?

Friday, May 16, 2003

Authorities combed the bottom of San Francisco Bay again Friday looking for clues in the Laci
Peterson case, more than a month after the bodies of Peterson and her unborn son
washed ashore.

Modesto, California, police Capt. Greg Savelli said the search could continue through the weekend,

A number of questions and issues remain unresolved:

• Police have said since March that they considered Laci a
homicide victim, yet no weapon has been found

• Investigators are particularly interested in finding the anchors that helped weigh down
Laci's body while it was under water, a source said. Authorities had found a concrete
weight in Scott's warehouse that they believe could have been the type used

• Parts of Laci's body remain unrecovered. On Thursday, a judge sealed results of an autopsy

In March, sonar experts spotted what they thought was a body lying at the bottom
of a shipping lane in the bay, but bad weather prevented further exploration.
When experts returned a few days later, they could not find the object.

A few days after that, the two bodies were discovered about a mile apart on consecutive days.

A source close to the investigation said the fetus was not born naturally. Authorities have
previously said that the decomposition process might have forced the baby from her body.

Representatives from a number of agencies armed with sonar technology, including a dive team
from the New York FBI office, gathered at the Yorba Linda Island Coast Guard station Friday
morning. Later, boats headed out on the bay and cordoned off search areas with buoys.

"We were called this morning by the Modesto Police Department regarding some
dive teams and equipment" to assist in searching for clues in the Peterson
case, a Marin County Sheriff's Department spokesman told CNN.

"We were asked if we could dedicate our marine patrol and dive team starting today,"
Doug Pittman said. He declined to say how long the search is expected to take.
