BRUTALITY GOT CONFESSION,
NEGRO CHARGES

***********

Robert Sewell, 26-year-old Negro charged with the murder-
robbery of
John H. Latham, salvage yard operator, yesterday
testified that police officers forced a confession from him
through time of brutality.

Sewell testified he was struck in the stomach, ribs and kidneys,
gouged in the eyes, kicked in the ribs and head and that his head
was butted against the wall until he was groggy.

He testified he made the confession because
"I just couldn't take it any more.  I figured I was going to
die one way or another"

Earlier, Detective Sgt. Ormsby testified that the confession was
obtained from Sewell without use of  "threats, force, violence
or promises". Ormsby testified that Sewell confessed after
being confronted twice with a friend, Robert Massey, Negro,
to whom he reportedly revealed details of the bludgeon murder
of Latham.  Massey testified Thursday that Sewell told him of the
crime 4 to 6 months after it occured, in December, 1945.

The trial will continue Monday before a jury in Superior
Judge William A. Glen's court, with most of the morning
session expected to be taken up with arguments on
whether the confession will be admitted as evidence.
