Laci Peterson's mother says only her own death will bring
closure to the murders of her daughter and grandson.

"There will always be a hole in my heart for Laci and Conner.
Closure will only occur for me when I complete my book of life, when I die,"

Sharon Rocha wrote in a statement she planned to read at a press conference after a
jury recommended her former son-in-law, Scott Peterson, be executed for the killings.

Rocha decided after the Dec. 13 verdict that she was too overwhelmed with emotion to speak
before reporters, but a copy of the
one-page statement was given to Court TV on Monday.

In it, Rocha thanked her family and friends, as well as prosecutors, police and the volunteers
who searched for the 27-year-old mother-to-be after she vanished on Dec. 24, 2002.

She  seemed to discourage celebration of the jury's decision.

"Today is not a joyous day," she wrote.  "It is just another sad reminder
of  WHOM we have lost, our Laci and Conner; and WHAT we have lost,
a huge part of our family, and, our lives, as we once knew them."

"There are no winners in a case like this one.
We are families suffering horrendous losses."

People tell me "Now, you can have some closure." There is no closure.
We are only turning the page and beginning the next chapter in our book of life.
There will always be a hole in my heart for Laci and Conner. Closure
will only occur for me when I complete my book of life, when I die.

It's been a long and painful two years and I'm not sure how we would have made it
through without the help and support of so many people. We would like to thank
all the volunteers who worked at the volunteer center as well as those who helped
search for Laci; the total strangers from all over the world who sent cards, letter
and e-mails with prayers and words of encouragement; the media who helped
keep Laci in the minds of so many; the wonderful people of Redwood
City who have been so gracious and opened their hearts to us.

I especially want to thank our family and friends. Had you not been
there for us, offering your love and support and helping us every
step of the way, I don't think I would be standing here today.

We are fortunate to have had Judge Delucchi preside over this case.
His knowledge of the law and sense of fairness kept the trial on track.

We are grateful for the members of the jury who were able to hang in there
for the past 6 1/2 months. They weighed the evidence and had to make,
what I can only assume to be, the most difficult decisions of their lives.

I want to thank all the law enforcements agencies involved
in the search and recovery of Laci and Conner.

And, above all, I want to offer a very, very special thank you to the Modesto
Police Department, the Stanislaus County District Attorney's and Sheriff's
Offices. YOU NEVER GAVE UP. Your commitment and dedication and the
many long hours you have worked on this case have not gone unnoticed.
You deserve your due recognition. YOU are the very best and I am forever
indebted to you. You will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you!!

Sharon Rocha attended nearly every day of the six-and-a-half-month-long trial.
During the penalty phase, she gave the trial's
most powerful testimony, yelling at
Peterson from the witness stand,
"Divorce is always an option, not murder."

Her partner, Ron Grantski, said Rocha will not grant any interviews until after the holidays.
