| Berkeley Marina Offers Few Clues For Missing Woman Authorities Trying To Pin Down Husband's Story January 4, 2003 A search for a missing pregnant woman has captured national attention and focused the efforts of hundreds of volunteers in Modesto, but the search for clues expands far beyond the valley. The day Laci Peterson disappeared, her husband, Scott, told police he went on a one-day fishing trip alone, 80 miles from Modesto, to the Berkeley marina. That was Christmas Eve morning. And when he returned, she was gone. Police are now trying to verify Scott's story and have already begun a search of the waters in the bay. Bob Parrish has been around the Berkeley marina for 20 years. "Normally,if you found one boat trailer on Christmas Eve, that would be average,"Parrish said. "I saw it on television -- the Ford pickup truck with the molded rear." Parrish was talking about the photos of the pickup truck and small fishing boat owned by Scott Peterson. "Most people I know would never venture out in that boat here in this time of year," Parrish said. But the weather was calm Christmas Eve morning, which is significant to sailor Jerry Fiddler. "It's shallow quite a ways out. You can go almost three miles out, and its 15-feet deep. So unless its windy and choppy, its fine in a small boat," said boat owner Jerry Fiddler. ====== **SCOTT RESEARCHED TIDES ON HIS COMPUTER Berkeley tides Dec 23-24, 2002 per Tideworld.com 2002/12/23 MO 3:19a 5.0 7:50a 3.6 1:27p 6.0 8:38p -0.6 2002/12/24 TU 4:03a 5.1 8:53a 3.4 2:20p 5.6 9:25p -0.3 ====== From: _KAT Apr-16, 2003 A poster named Expat has done some research on tides in the Brooks Island area and posted them on CrimeNews2000. Apparently there is a reverse tide effect that happens in late March. Things in the bay start to turn around and come in to shore in the spring! THANKS KAT!!! ----- HERE IS THE GREAT INSIGHT TO THE WEATHER AND TIDE CONDITIONS FROM EXPAT IT IS A "MUST READ" AS IT HELPS YOU UNDERSTAND THE TIDES IN "PLAIN ENGLISH" Re: HEADS UP!!!! [Post#: 93882 / re: 93863 ] Hi everyone... I did a little research. Not sure if any of you will find this THAT interesting, nevertheless, I was curious in the distance between the discovery of fetus & adult - both timewise and geographically. (For this exercise only, I have based this post on the bodies being Laci and Conner) So, off I ventured into the internet and through a myriad of sites and information, the closest I can dig up is the following (my very raw knowledge might pre-empt an expert to polish these scratchings, perhaps? Here goes: Study: TIDES & CURRENTS & WEATHER Location: BERKELEY YATCH HARBOUR & RICHMOND POINT Timing: AS OF MIDNIGHT 15 April INTO 16 April, 2003 (PST): The site I eventually found does not post historic data, only 'next day' ie 15 into 16 April. At this time of the year, changes are really minor- especially when we're talking 24 hours. All times are PST: 16 April, 2003 will see a full moon in the region. RICHMOND: CURRENT: The weakest (or 'slack') current is estimated to be @ 0.00 knots at 01:06 PST 15 April and the strongest rises to 1.35 knots around 4:00 pm 15 April and up to 1.50 by 04:00 am into 16 April. TIDES: by 18:25 est low tide will be 0.23 feet and high tide, at 00:09 (now 16 April) will reach 6.16 feet. Tidal variance: just under 6 foot of water The speed is SLOWER at sunrise and increases towards sunset and through the night. At dawn, the current speed drops way back. BERKELEY HARBOUR: CURRENT: the max (flood) speed only reaches between 0.28 and 0.42 knots, with high tide estimated to be 6' 4" @ 01:55 am and low tide around 5:47 pm @ 0.3 feet. But - it is also protected due the marina and harbour being built - unlikely that much would be 'washed in from the tide'. However, just outside the marina waters, is the Tide Current STATION!!! This is where people get swept out to sea and, with the assistance of solstice/seasons change (circa 21 March, 2003 - INTERESTING DATE - the TIDE TURNS!!! I also looked at the estimated wind speed - the role of the full moon as well as the warming waters/air and springtime environment in the surrounding area in order to try and understand what role "mother nature" or global elements may have played in bringing the bodies back at this time, and not earlier or during the winter. The more I read the more I searched and I'm not going to include every weather indicator - don't want anyone nodding off here. I must also stress that various sites offered slightly different times/tidal heights/current speeds and warmer weather. I also accept that the bodies could have been delayed by being 'weighted' down, etc - but mine was not a forensic search (you guys are the pros there) but more of a 'natural' search. "Tide stations" are normally located along a shoreline, while most "Tidal CURRENT stations" are located off shore in channels, rivers ... and BAYS (!!) Tidal current stations are not the same as the majorwarm and cold global currents, they're localised... My interest was aroused by the people who were, ironically and by eery coincidence, taking THEIR dog for a walk when the bodies were discovered, one day after the next. Even though low tide comes a couple of times during the day, I wanted to know 'why then' and why a day apart? Well, when I researched current direction - the answer unfolded (to me, anyway...). The current speed direction for Richmond is listed (right now) at between 324 and 333. Directions are given in degrees, from true north being 000 to 359 - then the DIRECTION of the flow relates to the reading. (In other words, when people say we did a 360 - it means we 'turned' on ourselves.) Well, given all of this information, time of day, position of moon, tidal current station, etc., the speed and direction from the current station indicates that the bodies were brought in from anywhere between 324 and 333 degress (ie - turned on themselves and were brought back to shore, carried by the strength of the currents). So, if you take that 'degree measurement' and reverse it, I am sure a mathmatician could work out the approximate location of where the body was dumped, and search in that area. The weight of the fetus, lighter, was carried first with the maternal body not far behind, but slower to progress to shore. The difference in the degrees I quoted, 324 and 333, indicates that between those two directions, the bodies began their journey back to earth, and the onset of high/low tide funded the arrival times. Of course the bodies could have been dumped further south, came adrift of any weights, were swept north toward Richmond Point, before the current, weather, and tide changed. Well. I am going to stop right here in case I've got everyone snoring. Had to do something until the next news bulletin. Any thoughts? Someone must be linked to a maritime engineer, doc or professional for a more polished and succinct story, surely? Finally gave me the meaning of the saying 'the tide will surely turn!' ... Wow, and how! Best: Expat -CrimeNews2000 ++++++++ All I can say is WHAT INSIGHT EXPAT has!
