MAIL CARRIER ADDS TO THE TIMELINE Russell Graybill Testifies Thursday June 10, 2004 Prosecutors had more success with another witness, the Petersons' mailman, who appeared to deal a blow to one aspect of the defense's abduction theory. Peterson's lawyers have implied the dogs that neighbors heard barking at about 10:40 a.m. on Dec. 24 might have been reacting to an assault on Laci Peterson as she walked her golden retriever, McKenzie. But mail carrier Russell Graybill gave another explanation. He said that many dogs lived on the Petersons' street, Covena Avenue, and they always barked at him as he made his rounds. "They sound like a chorus," Graybill said, adding that he knew the habits of each retriever, husky and terrier on the block because he had been twice bitten on his route. Postman Russell Graybill said he delivered the Petersons' mail that day between 10:35 and 10:50 a.m., a time that corresponds to the cacophony of barks neighbors say they heard. The neighborhood's mail carrier, recalled that the Peterson's dog would sometimes get out of the backyard and, being territorial, interfere with mail delivery to the Peterson's home. Graybill did not recall the dog bothering him on December 24, 2002, when Laci disappeared. Between 10:35 to 10:50, Graybill was making his way down Covena Avenue. The U.S. Postal Service uses a bar-code tracking system along the route to determine where their letter carriers are situated and at what time, he said. He explained that his timeframe was based on data from a postal tracking system. Six of the 600 homes he serviced had barcodes on the mailboxes, recording the time of his delivery. The Petersons' home was not one of the houses with the barcode, but studying the records of other homes helped him calculate the time he put mail in the couple's box. Graybill said he, too, noticed nothing odd, adding that dogs were barking at him as usual. Every dog, he said, except for the Petersons' golden retriever, McKenzie, who did not bark as he usually does. As Graybill was making his rounds, Amie Krigbaum was getting up, she said Wednesday. She awoke to barking dogs about 10:35 or so, she said. HOME INDEX LACI SCOTT TRIAL ALIBI-WITNESS LIST |
