| NEIGHBORS AMIE KRIGBAUM & TERRA VENABLE TESTIFY June 9, 2004 As mailman Russell Graybill was making his rounds, Amie Krigbaum was getting up, she said on Wednesday. She awoke to barking dogs about 10:30 or so, she said. She testified that she was awakened about 10:35 a.m. that day by two dogs barking: a neighbor's dog named Sage and one she later realized sounded like McKenzie. Krigbaum let her own dog out, noticing nothing unusual as she waited on the front porch across from the Peterson's house. "It seemed like no neighbors were out that day for some reason," she said. Peterson's truck was not in his driveway, but his wife's Land Rover was there. There were no unusual vehicles in the area, Krigbaum said. Krigbaum originally told police that the barking awakened her at 10:38 a.m., but after being questioned on the stand indicated that the 10:30 time was probably more accurate. "McKenzie didn't really bark a lot," Krigbaum said, adding that she is a dog owner and knows the neighborhood dogs. Sage barked regularly, but that normally didn't trigger McKenzie to bark, Krigbaum said. Krigbaum said McKenzie was "just going crazy" when the police came to tow away Peterson's pickup truck a few days later. "We heard that familiar bark from that original day, and we're, like, 'That sounds like the same bark on that day that we didn't recognize,'" Krigbaum said. Amie Krigbaum, who lived directly across the street from the Petersons, said Scott looked distraught when he knocked on her door and asked her if she'd seen his wife. "He told me he was golfing all day and he had tried to call her,'' said Krigbaum. Krigbaum's partner, Terra Venable, also testified that she heard Peterson say he'd spent the day at the golf course. Venable said she was standing in the kitchen 10 feet from the front door when Peterson showed up. Venable stated she and Amie looked out their window around 4:45 PM on Christmas Eve and saw a package in the mailbox at Laci's house. They noticed Laci's car was still in the driveway but the house looked unoccupied because the drapes had been drawn all day. At this point, neither had seen either Laci or Scott during the day and Scott's truck was gone. They saw the Christmas lights come on and figured Laci was home alone. They discussed that it would be sad if Laci was spending Christmas Eve without Scott. Then around 6:00 PM Scott knocked at the door. That's when Venable overheard Scott tell Amie he had been golfing all day. Venable said Amie looked upset after Scott left and wondered what they should do. They decided to go to the park to help with the search for Laci. A VAN surfaced during questioning -- but not a tan or brown van the defense team hopes to link to Laci Peterson's disappearance. Krigbaum also testified that she parked a Siemens VAN from work across the street from the Petersons' house all day Christmas Eve 2002. She brought the house down when she smirked and described the Chevrolet Astrovan: white, with neon green lettering on the back and sides. "It's very difficult to miss," Krigbaum said. Before Laci Peterson's remains were recovered in April 2003, authorities hypnotized a witness to help her recall a van she said she saw parked in about the same spot the morning in question.
