Not an 'affair'

Frey testified that she gave a press conference Jan. 24 because she was
deluged by press requests after a Fresno radio station leaked her name.

"I spoke of my relation with Scott and I spoke of my hopes for Laci's safe return as
well as I asked for my friends in the media to basically leave me alone
," Frey said.

According to the tapes, Scott Peterson phoned her twice the day after the press conference
and, rather than being angry, he congratulated her on her bravery and "character."

"Well....I wanted to say how brave you are and I'm realy glad that you did that"
"You know it sounds weird, but um ... I was so ... I dunno, in awe yet so proud of you if you
will
," he told her. "When you did that, it was amazing, you have an amazing character."

"It really wasn't a matter of choice.  I was uh.....they were staked out at my work all day." said Frey

"I know but it was still incredibly brave." he said   "It just shows what amazing
character you have.
"  "You're uh....just....just amazing, just unbelievable.
Um...and I hope that it stops,  the harassment of you, and I'll talk to you in a bit
."

He called her back a few hours later asking......."So did you call
them and say I want to do a press conference or what
?

"No, my God, I had CBS parked outside my business.   I couldn't believe they
were there," she said.I...I was stuck inside my office from 10:30 till the
police from Modesto came to get me because I couldn't leave
." Frey told him.

He told Frey that he was planning on doing his own media interviews, and she requested
that he not refer to their six weeks together as an "
affair" but as a "romantic relationship."
Since she did not know he was married, it was not an affair on her part, she reasoned.

Peterson agreed, and in subsequent interviews he called
their liaison an "
inappropriate romantic relationship."

After his interview with "Good Morning, America," Frey phoned him and said she
was upset that he had told ABC anchor Diane Sawyer that he did not love her. At first
Peterson claimed comments about how much he cared for her were "
hacked out"
by editors, but later he seemed to concede that their relationship fell short of love.

"Honestly, I've never looked at you as, you know, being ready if that means
that, you know, this is what you want right now
," Peterson stammered.

In the calls, Scott never asked if Frey was recording their conversations, but in early February,
he seemed worried that someone was monitoring his calls. He mentioned to her that he
had "
one very important thing" to tell her but could not discuss it over the telephone.

When she refused to meet him in person, he suggested they both use pay phones.
He called her several times from pay phones and she used the phone in her father's office.
On those occasions, she taped the call and Peterson did not disclose the "
important thing."

The 31-year-old faces the death penalty if convicted of
two counts of murder. The trial is now in its
12th week.
