Scott Peterson was reading a Boris Pasternak poem to Amber Frey two weeks after his pregnant wife, Laci, disappeared: On the first day of Scott Peterson's double-murder trial, prosecutors played a grainy recording of the Modesto man reading poetry to his girlfriend, Amber Frey. "Beneath the willow wound round with ivy We take cover from the worst of the storm, with a greatcoat round our shoulders and my hands around your waist," Said Peterson, quoting Boris Pasternak's poem "Hops" before Frey stopped him. "What are you talking about?" she asked. The poem finishes, "I've got it wrong. That isn't ivy entwined in the bushes round the wood, but *hops You intoxicate me! Let's spread the greatcoat on the ground." Peterson later explains the poem: "I was thinking of you sexually." This was actualy a poem favored by Laci and the first paragraph was written down and posted at the Search Center in the beginning. Scott had added the words, "You are her waist" Frey recorded the "poetry phone call" two weeks after Laci Peterson went missing, and prosecutor Rick Distaso highlighted it in his opening statement as an example of Peterson's seeming disregard for his missing pregnant wife.
