| DAY 3 - JUNE 3, 2004 TRIAL OF SCOTT PETERSON |
| TESTIMONY OF MICHELLE BUER Owner of SWEET SERENITY SPA AND TINA REISWIG - Manicurist |
| Two prosecution witnesses at a spa Laci Peterson visited just after noon, Dec. 23 testified she wore a white shirt and black stretch pants. The owner of Sweet Serenity Day Spa, where Laci went for a waxing treatment said police inaccurately recorded parts of her initial statement. Michelle Buer said she didn't tell authorities on the day Laci Peterson vanished that she suspected Scott was involved – though she did say that later. Unlike many of her other clients, Buer said Laci Peterson never complained about her husband, though she did mention that she was uncomfortable and not sleeping well. Buer and her manicurist Tina Reiswig testified. Both women said Laci seemed exhausted. "She just wasn't herself," Reiswig said. "She just said she was tired." Buer, who gave Laci a facial waxing, said the expectant mother complained of tiredness and said she was unable to sleep. "She was a rare pregnant woman, said Michelle Buer, whom Laci saw regularly, "She was very happy through her whole pregnancy." Her energy level is important because Scott claims that when he last saw his wife, the morning of Dec. 24, she was mopping the kitchen floor and talking about taking their dog for a walk. His lawyers have said she was likely abducted while walking the dog, but prosecutors say she was too far along in her pregnancy for such exertion. On cross-examination, one of Peterson's lawyers hinted that Buer was biased against the defendant. Buer acknowledged that after helping Scott Peterson make fliers about his missing wife on Dec. 24, she began to suspect that he was involved in his wife's disappearance. She testified she told a police detective that she would not assist further in the search. "I told him I was uncomfortable discussing Scott with [his supporters] because of an opinion I had already created," she said. Defense lawyer Pat Harris also used Buer's testimony to criticize police detectives. The prosecution witness conceded that detectives misconstrued or misstated parts of her account in a report.
