| After weeks of swallowing Scott Peterson's lies, Amber Frey angrily lashed out at her deceitful lover, telling him in tape-recorded phone calls that she suspected he was involved in his pregnant wife's disappearance. In the calls played Thursday at his double-murder trial, the mistress confronted Scott about a conversation they had weeks before his wife, Laci, vanished in which the fertilizer salesman said he had "lost" his spouse recently and would be spending his first holiday without her. He reported the 27-year-old mother-to-be missing on Dec. 24, 2002. "Are you psychic? I mean you predicted your wife would be missing," an indignant Frey shouted during one of three Jan. 6, 2003, calls played for jurors. "This is the biggest coincidence ever!" He insisted he was not "evil like that." "I had nothing to do with her disappearance," he whimpered. "Save your tears," Frey snapped back. *********************** In the Jan. 6 call, Peterson, who had pretended for weeks to be calling Frey from Europe, confessed to her that he had been lying. "I'm so sorry this has happened and I am so sorry I'm going to hurt you in this way. I don't want to do this over the phone," Peterson said. "I want to tell you this, I want to be there in person to tell you this. During the last couple of weeks I have lied to you that I've been traveling." "The media has been telling everyone that I had something to do with her disappearance," Peterson said "So the past two weeks I've been hunted by the media. ... I know that I am, you know, I'm destroyed." Later in the conversation, Frey said, "So, you know, you and I..." "Are destroyed," Peterson said. (Yahoo News) ******************************* Recordings of calls and a tape of a fourth conversation occupied Frey's third day as a witness. As she did for much of Wednesday's court session, however, the 29-year-old massage therapist sat not in the witness chair, but in the spectator's gallery, following along with a transcript as her conversations with Peterson echoed through the room. In the calls, Peterson, who did not know he was being recorded, maintained his innocence, but refused to answer most of the questions Frey asked, including why he tricked her into thinking he was single and whether he was the father of Laci Peterson's child. "I cannot tell you everything," he said after she pressed him several times on the paternity of the baby. DNA tests proved the fetus was his, but in the calls Scott twice referred to his unborn son as "her child." Prosecutors contend Peterson killed his wife because he dreaded the responsibilities of fatherhood and wanted to pursue a relationship with Frey. TONE CHANGES The tapes, made after Scott admitted he had lied, portrayed a different side to the massage therapist than recordings played for jurors Tuesday and Wednesday. In those calls, Frey knew of Scott's deception, but had agreed to go along with the charade to allow police to tape their conversations. In those calls, Frey cooed to Peterson about rainbows and Bible study in a girlish, high-pitched voice. But in the recordings played Thursday, Frey was by turns antagonistic and sarcastic as she told Peterson — sometimes profanely — that he had ruined her life. "I didn't need this in my life. I didn't need for somebody to come in and to f--- it up. I have worked too hard," she screamed into the phone. In the gallery, Frey wiped tears from her eyes with a tissue. Scott stared down at his transcript on the defense table. The single mother dated Peterson for six weeks believing he was a bachelor who wanted a future with her and her toddler daughter. With his wife's disappearance gaining massive national attention, Peterson came clean to Frey on Jan. 6. In the calls, Peterson told his mistress that he wanted his wife back and had no idea what had happened to her. When he suggested that his wife's disappearance might be linked to a neighborhood robbery, a dubious-sounding Frey shot back, "Well, robbers don't steal people." Frey told Peterson that the only thing that would change her opinion was the safe return of his wife. "God, I hope she is found alive," he said. "We all hope she's found alive. We're all working for that." He said he still thought someone might be "holding her for her child and that we can, you know, get her back with a tip." In the calls, Peterson did not mention loving or missing his wife, but said again and again that he was dismayed about the loss of his relationship with Frey. "I lied to you, and I hate myself for that," he said, and later referred to his lies as "a sin." Sins of the father Peterson told Frey during hours of conversations after his wife disappeared that he was visiting his family in Maine and then on a business trip in Europe. They had long discussions about their relationship, favorite movies and Frey's daughter, Ayianna. The talks occurred while volunteers were combing northern California for signs of Laci Peterson. "If you really cared about her and your baby, then why didn't you just let me go when she came up missing?" Frey asked. Peterson said that he felt it was the right thing to do. "It wouldn't have been fair to never have called," he said. She told him she thought it was "twisted" that "you have a missing pregnant wife and you're talking to your girlfriend." "It sounds terrible," Peterson admitted. He explained that the conversation cheered him with "positive energy." At one point, he insisted he had never cheated on Frey, prompting her to guffaw. "You're married. How do you figure you never cheated on me?" she asked. "I want to explain to you, Amber," he said, but then told her that for her protection and the protection of others, he could not. Throughout the two phone calls, Peterson repeatedly told Frey that she did not understand the whole story and that he wanted to explain his actions and his marriage to her, but could not. Sometimes he told her that he could not explain it because he wanted to protect her, his family and his wife's family. At another point, however, he said he did not want her to give information to the press, especially "cowboy reporters." When Frey asked if Peterson had planned a future with her, he answered, "I can't tell you everything now. I'm so sorry." Among the things Peterson said he could not explain was why he told her that he did not want any children of his own and was considering a vasectomy. "All along knowing you have a baby on the way. Explain that to me," Frey demanded. "Sweetie, I can't. I cannot tell you everything now," he said. An exasperated Frey later asked, "If she's found and she's dead, can we still talk about it?" "My God, don't say that," Peterson said. POINTED QUESTIONS The final call played for jurors Thursday came the day after Frey's emotional confrontation and seemed to have a different tone. A detective testified that officers sometimes fed Frey questions to ask Peterson, and in the Jan. 7 conversations, her words sounded stilted at times. "So, how are you going to plea your innocence?" she asked. Peterson told her, "I don't have to. I know I am innocent." His responses also seem more carefully crafted. He told her that while he hoped to someday have a relationship with her, he thought it unlikely she could ever trust him. "I would consider me a complete a--hole who's done everything to Amber that she does not deserve and question if she could ever trust me again," he said. When Frey asked if Laci Peterson knew of their affair, he said — as he later told police and reporters — that she did and was "fine" with it. "An eighth-month pregnant woman, fine about another woman," Frey repeated incredulously. "You don't know all the facts. Amber, you don't know all the facts," Peterson replied. She pressed him further, but he maintained his wife was aware he had a mistress. "Unbelievable," Frey exclaimed. Before he dismissed jurors for the weekend, Judge Alfred Delucchi told them to anticipate spending Monday and most of Tuesday listening to more phone calls between Frey and Peterson. 23 MINUTE TRANSCRIPT OF PHONE CALL HOME INDEX LACI SCOTT AMBER TRIAL ALIBI-WITNESS LIST WIRETAPS MAGAZINES |
