Under questioning by Geragos, Sgt. Rick Armendariz said dive teams aided by side-scan
sonar turned up buckets, tires, plastic bags, a metal pipe, a 12-ounce bottle and a beer can.

The items were photographed and discarded after they didn't appear
to be related to the missing person case, Armendariz said.

Geragos used the findings to suggest authorities had ample equipment and opportunity
to locate any homemade anchors Peterson could have used to sink his wife's body.

"Apparently this was so sophisticated that they could spot a target as small as a beer can," Geragos said.

Armendariz described the sonar images as "shapes, size and shadows" rather than distinct pictures.

Divers sometimes could not see their hands because of poor visibility,
Armendariz said, doggedly maintaining that divers may have stumbled across
the small items while simply feeling their way through bay-bottom mud.

Geragos asked if Armendariz was aware that divers searched more than 223 target
locations. Prosecutors objected to the question and Armendariz didn't have to answer.
