| Dog walkers and neighbors testify Friday ~ September 9, 2004 Recalling cold weather and walking their dogs in the park where Laci often walked her own dog, witnesses called this morning by prosecutors in the Scott Peterson trial said they didn't notice anything unusual the day Laci disappeared. KIM WESTPHAL Westphal lives in the Petersons' Modesto neighborhood, and, like Laci Peterson, used to walk her golden retriever frequently in the area. Westphal said she walked her dog on Dec. 24, 2002, about 10:30 a.m. She saw nothing out of the ordinary, she said. On cross-examination, she acknowledged that she was not pregnant in late 2002. PATRICIA MEWHINNEY Mewhinney frequently walks her dog in La Loma Park, where Laci Peterson used to walk her dog. Mewhinney walked there on Dec. 24, 2002, and was wearing a large coat. The weather was cold, she said, but nothing unusual caught her attention. On cross-examination, she acknowledged that she had long blond hair in late 2002, and that her dog is a Labrador-German shepherd mix. BRIAN LEE Lee lives in the Petersons' Modesto neighborhood and frequently went running with his dog in La Loma Park. He ran with the dog on Dec. 24, 2002, about 10:15 a.m. and ``didn't see a soul.'' JOAN LEE Lee is Brian Lee's wife, and was 4 1/2 months pregnant in late December 2002. She would frequently walk in the neighborhood in the evenings around that time with her chocolate Labrador and husband. DIANNE MERENDA Merenda lives near the Petersons and walks her golden retriever through the neighborhood and at La Loma Park. She acknowledged that she was not pregnant in late 2002, did not walk on Dec. 24, 2002, and has blond hair. MELBA MARTINEZ Martinez lives near the Petersons and frequently walks her golden retrievers, one at a time, through the neighborhood and past the Petersons' home. She could not recall whether she walked on Dec. 24, 2002. AMY NEUMANN Neumann lives near the Petersons and was at home before 10 a.m. on Dec. 24. She said she did not see Laci Peterson walking that morning. She acknowledged that she left her home around 10 a.m. Prosecutors appeared to be working to explain multiple sightings of Laci after police investigators believed she had already been killed. Some witnesses also said Laci's East La Loma neighborhood seemed quiet and reported no suspicious characters there.
