WITNESS CAUSES CHUCKLES
September 22, 2004

The tension in court was broken when California Department of Justice Agent Alex Quick
took the stand. The court clerk didn't notice that Quick's right hand was in a sling and
proceeded to ask the agent to raise his right hand to be sworn in. The jury and
court observers erupted in laughter. Quick was not sure what he was supposed
to do, until Judge Al Delucchi told him he could raise his left hand instead.

Agent Quick, who tailed Peterson until his April 18 arrest near a San Diego golf
course, said Peterson soon figured out that his maroon
Mercedes was being
followed by law enforcement officers in 10 cars,  and led Quick and nine other officers
on a 160-mile circle through parts of Orange, Riverside and San Diego counties.

"Did Scott Peterson contact you in any way or let you know he
knew he was being followed
?" prosecutor Rick Distaso asked.

"He displayed his middle finger," the agent replied. When the prosecutor asked if Quick
understood what Peterson was trying to convey, several jurors laughed and Peterson smiled.

The agent saw other officers arrest Peterson and said that Peterson had orange hair and
a heavy goatee. Quick said he collected
wads of cash from the Mercedes and Peterson's
pocket. Other officers are expected to testify that Peterson was carrying more than $1,400.

Under cross-examination by Geragos, Quick acknowledged that all the
officers involved in the pursuit wore plain clothes, drove unmarked
cars and did not identify themselves as officers until the arrest.

Peterson's defense has suggested he was trying to avoid tabloid reporters
who were also following him, and Geragos noted that police found in the
Mercedes a piece of paper with descriptions of all the cars tailing him.

"The first attempt to pull him over, he pulled over," Geragos asked.

"Yes," Quick said.
