| Peterson Cries As Friend Gives Testimony
Peterson Friend: Scott Left 'Frantic' Message August 4, 2004-NBC NEWS 11 Scott Peterson appeared to cry in court Wednesday during testimony from one of his Modesto friends about the pair looking at camouflage-patterned children's clothing in a catalog in the weeks before his pregnant wife Laci disappeared. Greg Reed testified that he and Peterson looked at a catalog that included the children's clothing sometime before Dec. 24, 2002, the day Laci Peterson was reported missing. During that portion of Reed's testimony, Peterson wiped his eyes and face with a hankerchief and several members of the courtroom audience sitting behind him and to his right say they saw a tear roll down his cheek. Reed said he received a phone call from Scott on Dec. 24, 2002 asking if he had seen Laci that day or the day before. He testified out of order because of scheduling issues. Reed said that he and his wife were friends of the Petersons and Peterson left a "frantic" message on their answering machine at approximately 5:30 p.m. on the 24th after allegedly returning from his fishing trip and discovering Laci Peterson missing. "Have you or Kristen seen or talked to Laci today or yesterday," Peterson's message said, according to Reed. When Peterson called him the afternoon of December 24, 2002, Scott never mentioned he'd been fishing, as he would later tell police. Reed's testimony casts doubt on Peterson's claim that he last saw his wife on the morning of the 24th when they watched a portion of the Martha Stewart television show together. Under cross-examination, defense attorney Pat Harris asked Reed about his impressions of Scott and Laci Peterson's relationship. "Scott and Laci had a great relationship and you never heard a negative word out of either one of them about the relationship," Harris asked. "That is correct," Reed said.
