| As the prosecution's case against Scott Peterson drew to a close, two of the philandering fertilizer salesman's former best friends testified that the suspected wife-killer lied about changing his hair color. The witnesses included Mike Richardson, the best man at the wedding of Scott and his murdered wife, Laci; and Aaron Fritz, a friend of Scott's since their freshman year of high school. Richardson recalled that when he saw Peterson on April 3, 2003 — two weeks before Peterson's arrest — his hair was a lighter color and he had grown a goatee. |
| Peterson told Richardson his hair got lighter after he went swimming in Fritz's pool. "I took it at face value," Richardson said. He said that by the time Peterson was arrested on April 18, 2003, his hair had gotten even lighter. Fritz then testified that Peterson, 31, was never in his pool or hot tub during the time in question. Richardson also testified that a month after Laci Peterson vanished, Scott Peterson called him in total desperation. "I'm so lost without her, Mike," Richardson said Peterson told him. "I don't know what to do. I'm sorry to call you like this. I need to talk to someone. I just want her back again." Defense attorneys suggested that Peterson changed his appearance and "started living a nomadic existence" because he was being hounded by the media.
