Peterson signed up for porn channels after wife vanished
August 3, 2004

Scott Peterson added the Playboy channel and two hard-core pornography stations to his programming
line-up after his pregnant wife went missing, a satellite television employee testified Tuesday.

The Dish Network representative told jurors Peterson subscribed to Playboy just 15 days after Laci Peterson
disappeared and then cancelled that station five days later in favor of the two "very explicit"
adult channels.

According to the employee, Donald Toy, Peterson remained a subscriber to those
channels for about a month. Then, on Feb. 18, 2003, the same day police executed
a search warrant on Peterson's home, his television service was cancelled entirely.

Peterson called a customer service representative to cancel the
service because he was "moving overseas," Toy said.

Prosecutors are likely to argue that Peterson subscribed to the channels because
he knew his wife was not coming back. Toy testified that the cable package purchased
in Laci Peterson's name two years earlier did not include pornography channels.

Toy gave his testimony over the strenuous objections of defense lawyer Mark Geragos, who argued
that the subscriptions to the adult channels had nothing to do with proving the murder charges.

"What it does do is further try to assassinate his character," Geragos said, as
his client, dressed in a gray suit, looked on from his seat at the defense table.

The judge, however, brushed aside his argument.

"The probative value outweighs the prejudice," Delucchi said.

Explicit programming
Toy testified that Peterson purchased a two-channel adult programming
package considered a "good deal" for subscribers.

According to the Dish Network's programming guide, The Erotic Network (TEN) shows movies
such as "Asian Fever 3: Treasures from the East" and "Kelly the Coed 9: SExtra Credit."

The offering of the other channel, Ecstasy, include "Eager Amateurs" and "B-cup Babes."

A police officer testified Monday that while officers were searching the couple's home
on Feb. 18, the televisions lost reception. He said he later called the Dish Network
because he was concerned that he had knocked out the service accidentally.

Toy said that several hours before the officer called, the Dish Network received the call
saying the service was no longer needed because the subscriber was leaving the country.

On cross-examination, Geragos suggested Peterson may have had another reason for telling
the satellite company he was leaving the country. He noted that the Dish Network makes it
difficult for customers to cancel, offering them deal after deal and keeping them on the phone.

He asked if it was possible that Peterson "just said, 'I can't listen to
this anymore. I'm leaving the country! Just cut off my service.'"

The court gallery erupted in laughter and Toy conceded it was a possibility.
