| June 29, 2004 Ron Welsh, a criminalist with the California Department of Justice, said he tested a fully loaded .22-caliber pistol removed by police from Scott Peterson's glove box on the day his wife disappeared. Peterson told the detective the loaded handgun found misfired when he had tried to use it about a month earlier. Welsh said the gun had not been fired recently, contradicting Peterson. Welsh testified Tuesday that he fired the gun repeatedly in succession when he tested it weeks later. He said the gun had missing hand grips and didn't appear to have been recently fired. "One of the first things I noticed was that the grips were missing," he said. "It just seemed like it was stripped." Welsh testified that he removed particles and debris from the barrel before firing it. Tests showed no trace of blood or tissue on the gun, Welsh said.
